Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is not as common as a pleural Mesothelioma. It is a cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity. The latency period for this type of disease is 20 to 30 years after exposure rather than the 30 to 40 years for pleural mesothelioma.
Symptoms
Symptoms for this disease are abdominal mass, increased abdominal growth ,distention of the abdomen, fever and weight loss. Some patients complain of more specific symptoms for a number of months before a confirmed diagnosis.
Diagnosis
CT findings may help us differentiate between the two clinical types of peritoneal mesothelioma since they appear very different upon imaging. If the fluid is there, it can be removed in a procedure called paracentesis.Fluid analysis can hardly fetch desired results. So, a tissue biopsy will be important in yielding a definitive analysis of the disease. There is no correct staging system available for peritoneal mesothelioma and if the

disease is staged it is done according to the TNM system, the most common staging system.
